  • Historic Walking Tour

Historic Ketchikan is the official caretaker of the Ketchikan Walking Tour which is actually two different tours. One tour covers 35 sites in the downtown area while a West End tour covers 30 sites between Downtown and the West End. Each year, Historic Ketchikan works with Pioneer Printing to produce and distribute more than 500,000 copies of the Walking Tour maps.

  • The Downtown Enhancement Program

Ketchikan has the largest percentage of historic properties in the state and many of these properties are located in the downtown area which has been Ketchikan's commercial heart for more than a century. With the tremendous growth in the visitor industry in the last decade, Historic Ketchikan has been hard at work developing plans to allow for economic development while still preserving the essential historic nature of the downtown. With the city of Ketchikan planning a significant port expansion in the next few years, it is crucial that infrastructure be developed in the downtown that will it absorb to the visitor increase. Historic Ketchikan is particularly interested in developing improved sidewalks and pedestrian flow. Amenities such as public bathrooms and small parks are also being considered as well as a more consist system of marquees that would keep the rain off pedestrians on more inclement days.

  • Ketchikan Creek Boardwalk Extension

Historic Ketchikan continues to develop plans for a trail along the north side of Ketchikan Creek that will create a loop trail with Married Man's Trail.

  • Waterfront Promenade

Historic Ketchikan continues to work the city and the state DOT in order to finish the promenade section along Stedman Street between the Federal Building and Thomas Basin. Plans are also in the works to extend the promenade from Thomas Basin to Coast Guard base when the DOT makes improvements to lower Stedman Street. Historic Ketchikan is also working with the city to develop the promenade north of the tunnel to connect up with future cruise docks in that area.

  • Historic Information

Historic Ketchikan acts a clearing house for local historical information. If we don't have the specific information on hand, we can usually point you in the right direction. We frequently research the historic provenance of local properties and help individuals research family information. This is in addition to promoting Spirit and Our Town, Ketchikan's two most popular local history/information publications.
